the Coolest … Vintage Bakelite

I love bakelite, even if it is not worth what it used to be. It has wonderful qualities that are unlike other vintage plastics. Bakelite colors tend to be rich and saturated, it was intricately carved and worked, and it has a nice weight in the hand. I am attracted to it whenever I see it, especially in its more unusual forms.
I currently have a pin in my etsy shop that is different than any I have seen. It is the carved face of a man or a troll or a dwarf…I don’t know. He always makes me think of Lord of the Rings, and my son thinks he looks grumpy. He is certainly not pretty, but the pin is extremely cool in its rare-ness. And it is GREEN – my favorite color.
So my Monday Feature conclusion is that Vintage Bakelite is the Coolest, and this guy is the Coolest piece of it I have found lately!
Bakelite popularity and values have definitely gone down in the last couple of years. What do you think – is bakelite on its way out or is it still desirable? Leave me a comment – I would love to hear your opinion.
